Summary

H14-2 Happiness belongs to Damien Hirst's 2024 H14 timed-edition series from HENI. It is a laminated Giclee print on aluminium composite panel measuring 120 x 93 cm. Released as a timed edition, its run size was determined by orders placed within a set window rather than a fixed advance cap, in keeping with HENI's demand-based edition model.

Why It Matters

Happiness sits second in the H14 sequence of virtue-titled works. The large laminated panel format lends the imagery a bright, resolved surface and museum-ready rigidity. Within a series structured around uplifting concepts, Happiness is among the most emotionally direct titles, giving it clear resonance for collectors drawn to the affirmative register of Hirst's recent editions.

Collector Perspective

The eventual scarcity of Happiness depends on the timed-edition tally from its release window. Collectors appreciate the aluminium composite support for its durability and clean wall presence, and the thematic coherence of the eight H14 titles makes the series attractive to assemble as a group. Happiness has particular appeal as an accessible, positively framed single work.

Historical Context

The timed-edition format Hirst and HENI refined with The Currency reframed how editions are sold, letting demand set the run. H14 carries that model into large panel prints. The virtue-based titling across the series reflects Hirst's recurring interest in belief, feeling and meaning, themes that run through his career from medicine cabinets to butterflies.

About the Artist

Damien Hirst (born 1965, Bristol) is a British artist and the most prominent figure of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Rising to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, he built a practice around mortality, science, religion, and beauty — from formaldehyde-preserved animals to his Spot, Spin, and Butterfly (Kaleidoscope) series. Hirst is also one of the most prolific printmakers in contemporary art, releasing extensive signed editions through his own science-led studio and, more recently, the HENI imprint. His work has commanded record prices and defined the market for blue-chip contemporary editions.

Collecting Damien Hirst at Gauntlet Gallery

Which Damien Hirst prints should I collect?

Signed, numbered editions from his signature series — Spots, Butterflies/Kaleidoscope, Spins, Cherry Blossoms, and skull works — are the collectible core. Look for strong condition and the artist's pencil signature. Gauntlet Gallery prioritizes complete, well-documented impressions.

How is a Hirst print authenticated?

We sell Hirst works with documented provenance and the edition's signature and numbering; many carry HENI or studio documentation. Each piece is photographed exactly as it ships, including signature and edition details.

What drives value?

Series and image (iconic Spots and Butterflies lead), edition size, format and scale, condition, and provenance all drive value. Hand-signed, low-numbered, and diamond-dust or foilblock works command premiums.
