Condition Policy
Every Gauntlet Gallery item is assessed against a defined standard before listing. We describe what we observe — not what we wish were true.
Our Grading Philosophy
Condition grading in the collectibles market is inconsistently applied. The same word — "mint" — means different things on eBay, at auction, and in a gallery context. Gauntlet uses a fixed internal vocabulary tied to observable, documentable traits: paper quality, surface condition, color fidelity, packaging, and signature integrity where applicable.
We do not inflate grades to improve perceived value. If an item has a flaw, we describe it. If we are uncertain about an aspect of condition, we say so. Buyers should treat our condition notes as starting points for their own evaluation, not as guarantees.
Condition Grades
No visible flaws under standard lighting. Paper or substrate is flat, clean, and without abrasion. Edges are sharp. Colors are vivid and unaffected by light or moisture. Signatures are clean and unsmudged. Packaging, if included, is intact. This grade is rare on secondary-market works.
Light handling wear only. Possible minor corner blunting or a single small surface mark visible only under close inspection. No folds, creases, or moisture. Color and image quality are excellent. Most Gauntlet prints fall in this range or above.
Obvious but minor handling wear. May have light surface scuffs, minor corner wear, or a thin line at an edge from prior matting. Image area is undamaged. Suitable for framing and display; imperfections are not visible at normal viewing distance.
Visible wear noticeable at close range. Possible light fading, minor staining at margins, or edge wear. The image itself remains intact and displayable. Items at this grade are priced accordingly.
Significant condition issues: noticeable fading, moisture damage, foxing, tears, or major creasing. Gauntlet rarely lists items at this grade. When we do, the listing includes detailed description and close-up photographs of the relevant damage.
Category Notes
Prints & Posters
We inspect under raking light for surface abrasion and direct light for fading. Margins are measured against known edition dimensions where possible. Any prior matting or framing history is noted.
Vinyl Figures — KAWS, BE@RBRICK
We examine paint application, joint tightness, and box condition separately. "Mint in Box" requires the box to be undamaged and un-taped. Figure condition and box condition are described independently.
Signed Memorabilia
Signature condition is assessed separately from the item. We note clarity, placement, smudging or fading, and whether the signature includes inscription or date. Signature assessment is not an authenticity determination.
Space & Astronaut Items
Vintage space memorabilia may show age consistent with its era. We note photo surface condition, edge wear, discoloration, and authentication documentation. Age consistent with history is not treated as a defect.
Signed Music Memorabilia
Unless specifically stated, signed guitars and music memorabilia sold by Gauntlet Gallery are collectible display pieces, not professionally serviced performance instruments.
Photographs & Documents
Silver gelatin, chromogenic, and inkjet prints age differently. We note the print type when known. Any yellowing, silvering, or surface abrasion is disclosed.
What We Photograph
Every listing includes photographs of the full work and any notable condition characteristics. For items graded Fine or below, we photograph the specific flaws. Buyers may request additional photographs — signature close-ups, corners, margins, back-of-work details — before purchase via the image request link on any product page or by emailing hi@gauntlet.gallery.
Returns Related to Condition
If an item arrives in materially worse condition than described — damage that occurred in transit or a flaw we failed to disclose — we will work with you to resolve it. Condition disagreements where the item matches our description but buyer expectations differ are not covered under our return policy. We encourage buyers to ask questions and request photos before purchasing.
