Summary

Black Wave is a 2009 giclee print with one hand-painted colour by Kai & Sunny on 100% cotton Somerset Enhanced paper, in an edition of 4. The unframed sheet measures 107 by 155 cm, framed in oak at 130 by 175 cm, rendering surging water and motion through the duo's dense linear abstraction and a hand-finished accent.

Why It Matters

The one hand-painted colour makes each of the four impressions individually finished, combining print reproducibility with the immediacy of the artists' hand. At large scale, Black Wave translates the power of water into Kai & Sunny's flowing line vocabulary.

Collector Perspective

An edition of only 4, each carrying a unique painted element, gives Black Wave strong appeal for collectors who prize hand finishing. Its monumental size, archival Somerset paper, and oak framing make it a gallery-scale acquisition from the duo's 2009 output.

Historical Context

Produced in 2009, Black Wave sits within Kai & Sunny's hand-finished giclee practice, where painted colour lifted each impression toward the unique. The wave motif reflects their recurring translation of natural forces, wind, water, weather, into abstract movement.

Kai & Sunny are a London-based artistic duo, Kai Clements and Sunny Todd, who met at art college and have collaborated since the late 1990s. They are known for intricate, hand-drawn line work exploring nature, patterns, and the forces of the natural world, often rendered as flowing, wind-swept compositions. Beyond fine-art prints and installations, they have built a notable design career, including celebrated collaborations with author Ben Okri and cover artwork for Penguin's editions of J.G. Ballard. Their editions are published in tightly controlled runs and have been exhibited internationally.
