Banksy Girl with Balloon — Authentication, Editions, and Value Guide 2026

Girl with Balloon is arguably the most recognised Banksy image in existence. It has appeared on walls from London's South Bank to auction rooms at Sotheby's — and its 2021 shredded variant, Love is in the Bin, sold for £18.58 million, setting a record for the artist. At gauntlet.gallery, we track the market for Girl with Balloon closely. Here is everything a collector needs to know in 2026.

Image History and Cultural Weight

The stencil first appeared on London's South Bank in the early 2000s and was later adapted into a series of limited-edition screen prints. The image of a young girl reaching toward a heart-shaped red balloon has become a global symbol of hope and loss, reproduced across prints, murals, and merchandise — which has also made it one of the most faked Banksy works in circulation.

The Love Is in the Bin Story

On October 5, 2018, a framed Girl with Balloon sold at Sotheby's London for £1.04 million — then, moments after the hammer fell, an alarm sounded and the canvas fed itself through a hidden shredder built into the frame. The half-shredded work was renamed Love is in the Bin. In October 2021, it resold at Sotheby's for £18.58 million — one of the largest prices ever achieved for a street art work at auction.

Authentication Red Flags

  • No Pest Control half-card certificate
  • COA from a third-party body (not Pest Control) claiming to be Banksy's authenticator
  • Ink bleeding or registration misalignment on screen prints
  • Paper weight inconsistent with documented editions
  • Numbering that does not match any known edition run
