Who is Mr. Brainwash?
Mr. Brainwash is the street art name of Thierry Guetta, born in 1966 in Garges-les-Gonesse, France. Based in Los Angeles since the 1990s, Guetta originally ran a vintage clothing store before becoming obsessed with documenting street artists on video.
Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)
Mr. Brainwash became internationally known through Banksy's Oscar-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010). The film follows Guetta's journey from street art documentarian to artist, culminating in his massive 2008 Hollywood debut show, Life is Beautiful.
Life is Beautiful (2008)
MBW's debut show in a 20,000-square-foot Hollywood warehouse attracted massive crowds and generated over $1 million in sales in its first week. Works from this show are considered the foundation of his collectible catalogue and carry the strongest provenance premiums in the secondary market.
Signature Style
MBW's aesthetic draws explicitly from Andy Warhol (pop imagery, screen printing, celebrity iconography), Shepard Fairey (bold graphic design, stencil technique), and Banksy (subversive use of public space). His signature works feature iconic figures — Einstein mid-paint-fight, Marilyn Monroe with graffiti overlays — combined with layers of newspaper collage and paint splatters.
