Shepard Fairey's Hope Poster: Authentication, Edition Types, and Current Market

The Barack Obama Hope poster (2008) is the most recognized piece of street art-adjacent visual culture produced in the 21st century. Shepard Fairey's stencil-based design — released initially as a grassroots political image and later formalized as an official campaign piece — was reproduced in multiple authorized editions with different authentication documentation, as well as countless unauthorized reproductions. Navigating the market requires understanding exactly which edition you're evaluating.

The Edition Types

  • Original street posters (2008) — Released before the campaign connection. Unsigned, undocumented. Collectible for cultural historians; forgeries are widespread.
  • Obey Giant signed and numbered editions — Released through Fairey's Obey Giant studio in defined editions. Each signed and numbered in pencil with an edition size. Gallery-standard authenticated format.
  • Unsigned open editions — Released widely during and after the campaign. Very limited collectible value.
  • Artist Proofs (AP) — Signed AP editions from the Obey Giant studio command 20–30% premiums over corresponding numbered editions.

Authentication

For the signed and numbered Obey Giant editions, authentication documentation from the studio is the standard. Gauntlet Gallery carries Fairey prints with full Obey Giant provenance documentation.
