Banksy GDP Editions: What They Are and Why They Matter for Authentication
In October 2019, Banksy opened GDP (Gross Domestic Product) — a temporary online shop that sold a range of objects, from prints to three-dimensional pieces. The GDP release created a class of Banksy-associated objects with direct sale documentation — a rarity in the Banksy market where most authentication depends on Pest Control retrospective certification rather than point-of-sale records.
Why GDP Objects Are Significant
GDP objects were sold directly by Banksy's organization, meaning their provenance is more directly documented than typical secondary market Banksy pieces. The purchase record from the GDP shop functions as a provenance anchor that the secondary market values accordingly. Objects with GDP purchase receipts command premiums at auction relative to comparable Banksy pieces where provenance depends on chain-of-custody reconstruction.
What Was Available
GDP offered prints, inflatable versions of existing works, three-dimensional pieces, and functional items. Some pieces were limited quantities; others were available for extended periods. GDP provenance alone does not establish value — the specific object, its condition, and authentication documentation all matter.
Pest Control and GDP
GDP pieces are generally certifiable by Pest Control as authentic Banksy works. Collecting both the GDP purchase documentation and a Pest Control certificate represents the highest-provenance state for GDP objects.
