About This Work

Filthy Lucre Ain’t Nothing New is a 2026 Shepard Fairey screenprint issued with CART Department’s New York exhibition. OBEY announced an edition of 500, released September 24, 2026, at an original price of USD 70.

Image and Composition

A burgundy and cream composition surrounds a vintage automobile with flames, repeating ornament, and money-related symbols. The vehicle is seen at an angle rather than as a flat side profile, giving it weight within the patterned field. A compact text block carries the title at the right, and a lower band identifies Fairey and CART. The result combines a decorative surface with imagery of consumption and destruction.

Release History and Meaning

Fairey’s exhibition statement describes the attraction and discomfort surrounding money. He connects his decorated 1937 Packard with an earlier burning Rolls-Royce image made in collaboration with Jamie Reid. The print belongs to that exhibition context; the car artwork, the earlier illustration, and this paper edition remain different objects.

The visual tension comes from making a desirable, richly patterned object the carrier of a criticism of luxury and power. The repeated decoration invites a close look, while the burning automobile interrupts any reading of the sheet as ornament alone. This interpretation concerns the published image; it does not attribute hand finishing or a unique surface treatment to the screenprint.

Presentation and Collector Notes

Use the exact title, sheet dimensions, paper, signature, and edition number together when identifying an example. The published edition describes the release; it does not establish the condition or ownership history of a particular sheet. Ask for photographs of the entire front and reverse, the margins, and both lower corners.

For display, allow for the full 24-by-18-inch sheet before choosing a mat and frame. Check for handling creases, corner wear, surface abrasion, fading, and evidence of mounting. Keep any original invoice and the seller’s condition photographs with the work. A photograph of a framed example can conceal edges and should be supplemented by an unframed condition report when practical.
