ABOUT THE WORK

A woman’s gaze meets yours through layers of torn ornamental pattern — indigo florals and cream lattice in Fairey’s signature collage style. First created in 2013, Universal Personhood is Fairey’s statement on peace, equality, and human dignity: the title references the recognition of women’s “equal personhood” and challenges the West’s dehumanization of Arab and Muslim people. In Fairey’s words, all people deserve the same basic assumption of respect and dignity. The original screen print sold out immediately and the image has since become one of the defining works of his career — this letterpress edition renders it with deep tactile impression on deckled cotton stock.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shepard Fairey (b. 1970) is one of the most influential street artists of his generation — creator of the OBEY Giant campaign and the 2008 Obama “Hope” poster. His work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Smithsonian, and LACMA.
