Photography for Insurance and Resale: How to Document Your Collection
A photograph taken with a smartphone in adequate light — if done correctly — provides usable documentation for insurance claims, authentication verification, and resale listings. Most collectors under-document their collections. Done well, it takes 10 minutes per piece and protects the full value of what you own.
What to Photograph
- Full front view — Piece flat or against a neutral background, even lighting, no shadows across the subject
- Full back view — Shows backing, any markings, labels, stickers
- Authentication documentation — PSA holders, Pest Control certificates, Zarelli documents, gallery receipts — legible text in the photograph
- Edition marking / signature — Closeup of pencil notation (e.g., "47/100") and signature on prints
- Base sticker (figures) — Medicom Toy, KAWS, production sticker
- Any damage or condition notes — Document existing condition issues before a sale or claim
Storage
Photographs stored only on a local hard drive are at risk. Use cloud backup with automatic sync. For high-value collections, keep a second copy of authentication certificates and photographs with your insurer directly or in a safe deposit box.
