Summary

Rubik Shot Red Marilyn (2023) is a HENI timed edition, a Diasec-mounted giclée on aluminium composite panel at 100 x 100 cm and 13.5 kg. Numbered and hand-signed on the label, it rebuilds Warhol's iconic Marilyn through Invader's Rubik's Cube grid, a pop image filtered through puzzle-piece pixels.

Why It Matters

Reworking Warhol's Shot Red Marilyn layers pop-art history into Invader's Rubik Cubism, one canonical appropriation reinterpreting another. That art-historical dialogue, delivered on a large Diasec panel, gives this edition conceptual weight beyond its striking surface and makes it a standout of the Rubik series.

Collector Perspective

The timed run of 774 is among the larger in this group, likely reflecting the pull of the Marilyn subject. The label signature and numbering authenticate the piece. Its 13.5 kg aluminium panel and high-gloss Diasec face demand secure mounting and controlled lighting to manage reflections.

Historical Context

Issued in 2023 by HENI Editions, this edition nods to Andy Warhol's Marilyn works, among the most recognized images in twentieth-century art. Invader's Rubik translation extends the pop lineage of appropriation, using the cube grid to re-pixelate an already-mediated icon for a screen-native era.

About the Artist

Invader (born 1969, France) is a pseudonymous French urban artist known for installing mosaic works inspired by 1970s-80s arcade video games, most famously the aliens from Space Invaders. Since the late 1990s he has "invaded" cities worldwide, cementing tile mosaics onto walls and mapping each installation as part of a global game. His studio output extends the pixel aesthetic into prints, "Rubikcubism" works made from Rubik's Cubes, aluminum pieces, and alias-signed editions. He remains anonymous, appearing publicly only masked.
