Shepard Fairey Pre-Obama Prints (1989–2007): Era Guide and Pricing

May 18, 2026

The pre-Obama period of Shepard Fairey's career (1989–2007) represents the most historically significant — and most challenging to authenticate — segment of his market. Works from this era predate gallery infrastructure, digital documentation, and the artist's formal authentication systems.

Three Sub-Eras of the Pre-Obama Period

Sub-Era 1: The Sticker and Wheatpaste Years (1989–1995)

Fairey began the OBEY campaign while studying at RISD (BFA 1992). Initial works were stickers and self-published zines distributed through skate and record shop networks.

  • Current market: Original sticker editions: $300–$1,200. Early screen prints with verifiable provenance: $1,500–$5,000+
  • Authentication challenge: No studio records for most works. Provenance must trace through contemporaneous documentation.

Sub-Era 2: Street Art Emergence (1995–2001)

Fairey introduced the red/black/cream palette and "Supply and Demand" visual language; received serious attention from art media and the emerging street art scene.

  • Key works: Early "Lenin," "Revolution," "Make Art Not War," "Star and Bars" series
  • Current market: $600–$2,500 standard; HP variants of 50–75: $2,000–$4,500

Sub-Era 3: Gallery Entry (2001–2007)

First solo exhibitions at Subliminal Projects (LA) and galleries in New York and London. Edition documentation became more rigorous.

  • Key works: "Revolution Girl," "Che Guevara" series, "Big Brother" series
  • Current market: $500–$2,000; exhibition-documented works: 30–80% premium

What Drives Premium Value in Pre-Obama Works

  1. Historical documentation: Works that appeared in SWINDLE magazine, early Juxtapoz features, or the "Supply and Demand" monograph command a premium
  2. Very small editions: Pre-gallery editions under 100 are genuinely scarce
  3. Exhibition history: Gallery provenance creates better paper trails even in this era
  4. Condition: Pre-2000 works in archival condition are increasingly rare

The Authentication Stack for Early Works

For works predating 2001, Verisart + COA is insufficient. Credible authentication requires:

  1. Primary documentation: original point-of-sale receipt or contemporaneous publication
  2. Physical inspection confirming period-appropriate paper stocks and ink oxidation consistent with age
  3. Archival cross-reference: Wayback Machine captures of obeygiant.com, early Juxtapoz reviews, exhibition catalogs
