Death NYC vs. Banksy: Pop Art Appropriation, Two Different Authentication Chains

May 25, 2026

Death NYC and Banksy both work in the tradition of appropriation and subversive pop imagery, and both are pseudonymous. That is where the similarity ends — at least in terms of how their work is authenticated and valued in the secondary market.

Authentication: Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

Banksy has the most developed authentication infrastructure in street art: Pest Control Office, the split currency note system, and a documented relationship with major auction houses. A Banksy print with Pest Control documentation is among the most verifiable items in the secondary collectibles market.

Death NYC operates at the other end of the transparency spectrum. The artist is pseudonymous and does not operate an equivalent of Pest Control. Authentication rests entirely on gallery-issued COAs, edition documentation, and provenance chains. There is no third-party service with deep Death NYC expertise equivalent to what Pest Control provides for Banksy.

Edition Structure and Supply

Both artists produce numbered limited editions in the 50 to 150 piece range. Banksy editions often appear at auction in limited quantities. Death NYC editions are more actively sold through gallery channels, making them more accessible at retail. Secondary market liquidity for Banksy is higher at the top end; Death NYC secondary market is more active in the $300 to $2,000 range.

Which Holds Value Better

For documented, Pest Control-certified Banksy works: Banksy. The combination of authentication clarity, museum-level institutional interest, and global name recognition creates a value floor that Death NYC has not yet achieved. For buyers at $500 to $2,000 looking for strong visual work with clear gallery documentation: Death NYC offers better accessibility and comparable authentication confidence at that price tier.

Gauntlet Gallery carries both with full documentation for every piece. Browse at gauntlet.gallery.
