Summary

Wavy Migration 1 is a 2024 eight-colour hand-pulled screen print on 410gsm Somerset radiant white cotton, at a large 85 x 120 cm with a hand-deckled bottom edge. Signed, stamped, and held to an edition of just 5, it is a technically ambitious, near-unique large-scale work.

Why It Matters

Eight colour passes is an exceptionally complex screen-print build, requiring precise registration across a very large sheet. Combined with an edition of only 5 and a hand-deckled edge, Wavy Migration 1 represents Kai & Sunny operating at the upper limit of their large-format screen-printing craft.

Collector Perspective

An edition of 5 makes this rare, and the eight-colour construction plus large scale give it significant presence and technical bragging rights. The hand-deckled edge and front stamp are part of its finish and should be preserved. Confirm signature (bottom left) and the front stamp (bottom right). Flat storage of the oversized 410gsm sheet is essential.

Historical Context

Wavy Migration 1 fuses two of the studio's signature titles—Wavy and Migration—within the 2024 output. It pushes the duo's flowing, wave-derived linework onto a monumental scale, extending the ornithological migration theme that recurs across their nature-focused catalogue.

FAQ

How many colours does it use?

Eight colours, hand-pulled—an especially complex screen-print build.

What is the edition size?

Just 5 impressions, signed and stamped.

How does it differ from Wavy Migration 2?

They are companion works; this is edition 5, while Wavy Migration 2 is an even smaller edition of 4.

What is the hand-deckled edge?

The bottom edge is finished by hand for a torn, artisanal border, characteristic of the studio's large prints.

About the Artist

Kai & Sunny are a London-based artistic duo, Kai Clements and Sunny Todd, who met at art college and have collaborated since the late 1990s. They are known for intricate, hand-drawn line work exploring nature, patterns, and the forces of the natural world, often rendered as flowing, wind-swept compositions. Beyond fine-art prints and installations, they have built a notable design career, including celebrated collaborations with author Ben Okri and cover artwork for Penguin's editions of J.G. Ballard. Their editions are published in tightly controlled runs and have been exhibited internationally.

Collecting Kai & Sunny at Gauntlet Gallery

What Kai & Sunny works should I collect?

Their signed, numbered silkscreen editions, often featuring metallic inks, blind embossing, and hand-finished detail, are the heart of the market. Foil and layered prints in small runs are especially collectible. Gauntlet Gallery selects pieces in pristine condition with crisp embossing and complete signing.

How is authenticity handled?

Kai & Sunny editions are offered with documented studio provenance and the duo's signature and numbering. We photograph the specific piece you will receive, including signature, edition number, and any embossing, so every detail is verifiable before you buy.

What drives value?

Small edition sizes, special finishes (foil, embossing, hand-work), condition, and provenance from a documented release drive value. Sold-out, low-numbered, and specially finished editions command the strongest premiums.
