SpaceX Astronaut Signed Photos: How Authentication Works for Commercial Crew
The commercial space memorabilia market is young enough that authentication standards are still being established. Unlike NASA institutional items — where JSA and Beckett have decades of signature exemplar data — SpaceX commercial crew signatures are newer to the authentication ecosystem. Gauntlet Gallery has established the following framework for evaluating every commercial crew signed item we acquire and sell.
The Authentication Hierarchy
- JSA (James Spence Authentication): The most commonly used authenticator for space items. JSA has processed signatures from Behnken, Hurley, Isaacman, and other commercial crew members. COAs include a hologram and verifiable online certificate number. Accept JSA for all commercial crew items.
- BAS (Beckett Authentication Services): Strong institutional reputation, increasingly used for celebrity and space items. BAS certificates are tamper-evident and database-verifiable. Comparable to JSA in credibility for commercial space.
- PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator): Primarily sports-focused but PSA/DNA is valid for space items. Less common for space specifically but fully acceptable at major auction houses.
- Not acceptable: Self-issued COAs, unknown "space galleries," handwritten letters without third-party backing.

The Gauntlet Gallery Authentication Standard
Every SpaceX and commercial crew item sold through Gauntlet Gallery includes: (1) third-party COA from JSA or BAS; (2) a Gauntlet Gallery provenance certificate documenting acquisition chain; (3) high-resolution photographs of the item and COA.
