Mercury vs Gemini: How Era Affects Astronaut Autograph Value

Price Benchmarks — Mercury and Gemini Signatures
Gus Grissom signed (JSA/PSA): $3,000–$12,000
John Glenn signed photo (JSA): $2,000–$5,000
Alan Shepard signed photo: $2,000–$6,000
Gordon Cooper signed photo: $800–$2,500
Wally Schirra signed photo: $600–$2,000
Ed White signed (Gemini EVA pioneer): $2,000–$8,000
General Gemini-era (non-Apollo famous): $300–$1,500

The Original Seven Premium

NASA selected the Mercury Seven in April 1959 — the first American astronauts. Their selection was a national event, covered by Life magazine in a landmark exclusive deal. The cultural footprint of these seven men (Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, Deke Slayton) exceeds any subsequent astronaut class by a wide margin.

Deceased Mercury Astronauts Command the Highest Premiums

Astronaut Era Died Signed Photo Range Rarity Factor
Gus Grissom Mercury/Gemini 1967 (Apollo 1) $3,000–$12,000 Very High
John Glenn Mercury 2016 $2,000–$5,000 Moderate (signed often)
Alan Shepard Mercury/Apollo 14 1998 $2,000–$6,000 High
Gordon Cooper Mercury/Gemini 2004 $800–$2,500 Moderate
Wally Schirra Mercury/Gemini/Apollo 2007 $600–$2,000 Moderate
Scott Carpenter Mercury 2013 $600–$2,000 Moderate
Deke Slayton Mercury/ASTP 1993 $800–$3,000 High

Gemini Signatures: Higher Supply, Lower Floor

The Gemini program flew 16 astronauts across 10 crewed missions. Most Gemini astronauts who did not also fly on Apollo or Mercury trade at significantly lower values ($300–$1,500 for signed photos). Exceptions exist for astronauts connected to tragedy or milestone achievement.

Ed White: The Gemini Signature Worth Tracking

Edward H. White II performed America's first spacewalk during Gemini 4 (June 1965), floating outside for 23 minutes. He died in the Apollo 1 fire alongside Grissom and Roger Chaffee on January 27, 1967. White signed relatively few items — his career was cut short at 36. Authenticated White signatures trade at $2,000–$8,000, comparable to senior Mercury astronauts despite his shorter public career.
