JSA vs. PSA vs. Beckett for Music Memorabilia: Which Authentication Service Is Best

By Gauntlet Gallery ·May 25, 2026

When buying authenticated music memorabilia, you will encounter three major authentication services: James Spence Authentication (JSA), PSA/DNA, and Beckett Authentication Services (BAS). All three are accepted in the secondary market, but they work differently and have different strengths.

JSA (James Spence Authentication)

JSA is widely used for music memorabilia and has processed a large volume of signed guitars, albums, photographs, and instruments. JSA's process involves in-person or mail-in submission; they issue a JSA cert and apply a hologram sticker to the item. For guitars and larger instruments, JSA is often the preferred service because their hologram can be placed on the headstock without obstructing the signature, and their cert format is detailed and readable. JSA's signature database for musicians is extensive.

Every signed music piece at Gauntlet Gallery lists its Beckett, JSA, or PSA certification up front, so you can verify the authenticator before you buy.

PSA/DNA

PSA/DNA is the largest autograph authentication service by volume, originally built on sports memorabilia. Their music memorabilia business has grown significantly. PSA can encapsulate small items (photos, cards, albums) and issues Letters of Authenticity for larger items like guitars. PSA's strength is brand recognition — the PSA logo carries strong buyer confidence across categories.

Beckett (BAS)

Beckett Authentication Services is respected across both sports and entertainment categories. Their process involves submission and a tamper-evident sticker plus cert. Beckett tends to be faster for turnaround than the other two for some submission categories, and their pricing is competitive. BAS is less common than PSA and JSA for music specifically, but fully accepted by the secondary market.

Which Is Best?

All three are acceptable. JSA tends to dominate at the high end of music memorabilia specifically — guitars, signed instruments, vintage album signings — because of their long history in the category. PSA has the highest brand recognition overall. BAS is a strong option and often faster. If you are buying with resale in mind, PSA carries the broadest recognition across buyer demographics.
