Two artists. Two approaches to anonymous dissent. Two very different markets. If you're deciding where to put your collecting dollar in the street art space, this comparison will help clarify the investment case for each.
Banksy: The Market
Banksy is the most volatile major artist in the contemporary market—which cuts both ways. Prices for authenticated works range from $10,000 for small prints to $25 million+ for paintings. The mystique premium is real and enormous.
Authentication challenge: Pest Control (Banksy's authentication body) does not issue COAs retroactively. Fakes are rampant. Never buy Banksy without Pest Control documentation.
Shepard Fairey: The Market
Fairey offers a more accessible and transparent market. Signed screen prints range from $400–$5,000 depending on edition size and series. His output is consistent, his studio is reachable, and authentication is more straightforward.
Authentication advantage: Fairey's studio has clear records of editions. Studio COAs are available for many works. No Pest Control-level complexity.
Which to Buy?
- Higher risk/reward: Banksy (if you can authenticate)
- Building a consistent collection: Shepard Fairey (more accessible, more transparent)
- Best value today: Fairey mid-tier screen prints from 2005–2015
