The Work
This collaboration brings together Shepard Fairey and Chuck D, the frontman and driving intellect of Public Enemy, one of the most politically charged groups in the history of hip-hop. The pairing is a natural one: both artists built their reputations on confrontational, message-first work that used mass media as a weapon against complacency. Fairey renders the Public Enemy imagery in his militant graphic style, all bold contrast and revolutionary iconography, echoing the group's own crosshair logo and its call to fight the power.
Public Enemy's music reshaped what hip-hop could say and do, and Fairey's OBEY project drew directly on that ethos of media disruption and political urgency. To have Chuck D sign alongside the artist makes this piece a document of a genuine kinship between two movements, street art and conscious rap, that grew from the same rebellious roots.
