The Image: Beauty as Warning
The image in this print is not a celebration. It is a confrontation disguised as one. Fairey photographed the original scene from Brooklyn, looking across the East River toward Manhattan, where factory smoke merged with the clouds at sundown. The result was a sunset so vivid it was impossible to look away from — and impossible to separate from what was causing it.
The design was also shaped by the pollution-fueled sunsets Fairey witnessed in Providence, Rhode Island, where industrial emissions turned the sky into something that looked designed. That tension — between beauty and its toxic source — is the entire point of the piece. The title is not a recommendation. It is a diagnosis.
In Fairey’s own words: “This large format print depicts a beautiful but ominous sunset disturbingly amplified by pollution.”
From Brooklyn to Munich: A Design That Became a Landmark
Fairey first released “These Sunsets Are to Die For” as a screen print in 2007 — a signed and numbered edition of 300 at 18″ × 24″ through KP Projects. He also produced a unique Rubylith version, using the masking film medium he had adopted in 2004 that became part of his studio process. The image appeared on wood panels at auction in 2008.
Then the design went monumental. Beginning in 2018, Fairey worked with artistic director Sebastian Pohl and the nonprofit Positive-Propaganda to translate the image into a large-scale mural on Heckenstaller Strasse in Munich, along the Mittlerer Ring — one of the city’s busiest highways. Hundreds of thousands of drivers now crawl past the mural every day in traffic, confronted by a gorgeous sunset that exists because of the emissions their own cars are producing. The irony is architectural.
This 2023 Large Format edition of 89 is the definitive collector’s version of the design — the largest numbered screen print edition, printed on the heaviest stock, with the smallest run. It was released alongside the exhibition “Positive-Propaganda – A Decade of Visual Resistance” at AMUSEUM of Contemporary Art. Proceeds from the sale benefited Greenpeace USA.

Note: An offset lithograph version (open edition, signed, 36″ × 24″ on cream Speckletone paper) also exists. That is an unsigned open edition — a fundamentally different product from this hand-numbered silkscreen of 89.
Why Large Format Matters
This is a hand-pulled silkscreen, not an offset lithograph or digital print. The distinction matters for collectors. In silkscreen (serigraphy), ink is forced through a fine mesh stencil directly onto the paper, building each color as a separate layer. This three-color print required three individual passes through the press, with registration maintained by hand across all 89 impressions.
The paper is 300g Gmund Cotton — a heavyweight archival stock with natural hand-deckled edges, the uneven feathered borders created during the papermaking process. Each sheet has individual character that machine-cut edges cannot replicate. At 31.5″ × 23.5″, this is substantially larger than Fairey’s standard 18″ × 24″ editions, giving the sunset composition room to command a wall.
Fairey reserves the Large Format designation and the partnership with Overrated Art Inc. for prints he considers significant. The Overrated publishing chop in the lower left corner confirms both the printer and the edition’s authenticity.
Fairey’s Environmental Work
Environmental activism is not a side project for Fairey. It is a central pillar of his practice. He has partnered with Greenpeace USA across dozens of editions, donating proceeds from prints including Sunset as the Fall Approaches, Green Power Factory, Carga Frágil, and this print. His murals addressing climate and pollution span multiple continents, from Munich to São Paulo.
The “Sunsets” design occupies a particular place in this body of work because of its subversive approach. Most environmental art presents damage as ugly. Fairey presents damage as beautiful — and asks the viewer to sit with the discomfort of finding it so. The title operates like a punchline that lands a beat too late: these sunsets are, literally, to die for. The more vivid the sky, the worse the air.
Placing the Munich mural along one of Europe’s most congested urban highways was the final move — forcing the very people contributing to the pollution to admire the artwork their emissions helped create.

Who This Is For
This is the rarest numbered edition of one of Fairey’s most enduring environmental images — a design that has traveled from a 2007 screen print to a Rubylith studio piece to a monumental Munich highway mural to this definitive 2023 Large Format run of just 89. The edition size alone separates it from Fairey’s typical runs of 300–550. The hand-deckled Gmund Cotton stock, three-color silkscreen process, and Overrated Art printing pedigree give it a material quality that offset lithographs and smaller editions cannot match. And as an artwork whose message — that the most beautiful sunsets are the most dangerous ones — grows more relevant every year, it carries both artistic and documentary weight.

SHEPARD FAIREY
Few contemporary artists have bridged underground culture and institutional recognition as effectively as Shepard Fairey. Emerging from skate and punk subcultures with the original Obey Giant campaign, he built a visual language rooted in propaganda aesthetics, bold iconography, and political commentary.
What makes Fairey compelling for collectors isn’t just name recognition — it’s durability. His work sits at the intersection of activism, design, and pop culture. \
From the globally recognized Hope poster to decades of tightly controlled screenprint editions, he has demonstrated both cultural relevance and disciplined market structure.
Institutional validation from MoMA, the Smithsonian, and the V&A reinforces long-term credibility. Meanwhile, secondary market data shows consistent liquidity and steady appreciation across core prints.
For collectors, this is cultural equity with infrastructure behind it — not trend-driven volatility.
