“Partisan” is a 2013 collaboration between Shepard Fairey and Gary Baseman — two of the most important artists to emerge from the Los Angeles street art scene. The subject is Ben Baseman, Gary’s father, depicted as the young WWII Jewish partisan fighter he once was, seated with a rifle in the forests of occupied Poland.
Ben Baseman survived the mass murders of 1941–42 in Eastern Europe, including the liquidation of his hometown of Berezne, Ukraine. After losing his parents and many loved ones to the Holocaust, he escaped into the forests and fought as a partisan for over three years. He survived the war, emigrated to the United States, and raised four children in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles — including the artist Gary Baseman. He lived to the age of 93.
