The Work
This portrait of Paul McCartney was created in support of Change Begins Within, the David Lynch Foundation benefit concert that brought together McCartney, Ringo Starr and other artists to raise money for teaching Transcendental Meditation to at-risk communities. Fairey renders the former Beatle in his instantly recognizable graphic idiom, the warm cream and red tones and layered decorative patterning lending the musician the reverence of an icon rather than a celebrity.
The subject is a natural fit for Fairey, whose work has long braided together music, activism and the belief that culture can be a genuine engine of change. McCartney's own lifelong advocacy, from peace to animal rights, mirrors the artist's conviction that personal transformation and social transformation are inseparable, an idea the concert title makes explicit.
