The Work
OBEY Chinese Soldier is an early Shepard Fairey work that channels the heroic realism of Chinese revolutionary posters, presenting a uniformed soldier with the flattened, idealized dignity of state propaganda art. Set against Fairey's decorative framing and stamped with the OBEY GIANT identity, the figure becomes a study in how regimes transform ordinary people into symbols of collective will.
As an Artist's Proof from Fairey's formative period, this impression carries particular significance, drawn from outside the numbered edition and typically reserved for the artist himself. The piece captures the moment when Fairey's fascination with authoritarian graphic design was crystallizing into a lifelong critical project, using the seductive polish of propaganda to make viewers question the imagery they are trained to admire.
Hand-signed in pencil by Shepard Fairey; Artist's Proof (AP).
