The Work

Not a Terrorist is a direct piece of Shepard Fairey activism, confronting the profiling and demonization that have shadowed Muslim and immigrant communities in the post-9/11 era. The declarative title functions as both protest and plea, a refusal of the labels imposed from outside, delivered with the blunt clarity Fairey brings to his most pointed political statements.

Fairey built his reputation on turning the tools of propaganda against prejudice, and this print does exactly that. Stripped of decorative excess, it leans on typography and stark imagery to insist on the humanity of those routinely cast as suspects. The message is unambiguous: fear-driven stereotypes flatten real people into threats, and art can push back by asserting individual dignity.

Produced as a letterpress edition on cream paper, the tactile impression of the type into the sheet gives the work a handmade gravity suited to its subject. Hand-signed and numbered in pencil, from an edition of 450.
