The Work
Shepard Fairey's Nixon takes one of the most contested figures in modern American politics and runs him through the OBEY propaganda machine. Rendered in Fairey's signature red, cream and black palette, the disgraced president is framed with the same authoritarian gravitas the artist once reserved for Andre the Giant and Soviet-era iconography, a deliberate collision of power, image control and public distrust. The stylized ornamental borders and bold sans-serif lettering borrow directly from the visual language of state propaganda, turning a portrait into a warning about how leaders manufacture consent.
The choice of Nixon is pointed. He remains shorthand for surveillance, secrecy and the erosion of trust between a government and its people, themes that run through Fairey's entire body of work. By elevating him to the scale and reverence of a revolutionary poster, Fairey forces the viewer to sit with the uncomfortable gap between the imagery of authority and the reality behind it. It is classic early-period Fairey: seductive design deployed to make you question the very seduction.
