The Work

This print is Fairey's tribute to Keith Haring, the artist whose bold outlines and radiant babies helped move graffiti and street imagery into the center of contemporary art. Haring was a clear forebear for Fairey, a figure who proved that a simple, reproducible visual language could carry serious social content, from the AIDS crisis to apartheid. Portraying him is an act of lineage, one street-rooted artist honoring another.

Fairey renders Haring within his own emblematic frame, surrounding the portrait with the decorative banding, halftone shading and typographic ornament that define his commemorative pieces. The result places Haring alongside the musicians and activists in Fairey's pantheon, treating the fellow artist as a cultural hero worthy of the same iconographic treatment.
