Few Shepard Fairey works so directly reconnect his mature studio practice with the raw DIY culture that launched OBEY.

Hello My Name Is deliberately revisits Fairey’s earliest visual language: Xerox machines, graffiti stickers, paste-ups, punk graphics and the original Andre the Giant Has a Posse imagery that helped ignite one of the most recognizable street-art campaigns in contemporary culture.

The centerpiece is unmistakable: an oversized red-and-white “Hello My Name Is” sticker framing the early Andre face. Around it is a dense field of torn paper, distressed newspaper fragments, tags, symbols and pasted graphic material. The composition looks as though it has been peeled directly from an urban wall after years of posters being layered, torn, painted over and re-pasted.

That weathered appearance is intentional.

Fairey has explained that the image traces back to his years in Providence, Rhode Island, when a nearby Kinko’s had both red and black toner cartridges. He used those machines to make inexpensive 11 x 17 red-and-black mini-posters. The “Hello My Name Is” format itself was inspired by the ubiquitous name-tag stickers used by graffiti writers in New York. Fairey has described the original paste-up as a tribute to graffiti culture and one of the last works in which he prominently used the original Giant face before transitioning toward the later OBEY Icon Face and Star.

That makes this print much more than a revival image.

It is effectively a visual autobiography of the OBEY project.

Visual Character

The design is intentionally rough, distressed and confrontational.

Cream paper gives the work an aged, analog quality, while the restricted red-and-black palette evokes punk flyers, photocopied zines, underground concert posters and illegal street paste-ups.

Unlike Fairey’s more polished later portraits, Hello My Name Is retains the visual noise and imperfection that defined his early street work.

That makes it especially effective in:

OBEY’s release materials describe the print as a signed and numbered edition produced on cream Speckletone paper. The release page contains an inconsistency between 450 and 550, while Fairey’s accompanying release announcement specifies 550; buyers should rely on the numbering visible on the actual print.

Fairey’s original Andre sticker campaign began as an experiment in repetition, curiosity and visual disruption. What began as an inside joke evolved into the OBEY phenomenon and ultimately into one of the defining graphic languages of contemporary street art.
