The Work
Chinese Stencil belongs to the early, raw phase of Fairey's studio work, when he was pushing the Obey Giant project into overtly propagandistic territory. The piece borrows the visual grammar of Chinese Cultural Revolution posters, the bold reds, the massed figures, the commanding graphic authority, and turns that language back on itself. Fairey's long-running strategy is to appropriate the tools of propaganda in order to expose how images command obedience.
The subtitle, The Medium Is The Message, quotes Marshall McLuhan and makes the critique explicit: the point is not what a poster says but how its very form conditions the viewer to submit. By staging that idea inside a stencil aesthetic, Fairey collapses the street-art method and the theoretical argument into one object, an artwork that is both a piece of propaganda and a commentary on how propaganda works.
