The Work

'AK-47 Lotus' is one of Shepard Fairey's most direct anti-war statements, fusing the silhouette of the world's most ubiquitous assault rifle with the lotus, an ancient emblem of peace, purity, and rebirth. The juxtaposition is deliberately jarring: an instrument of mass violence entwined with a flower of enlightenment, forcing the viewer to hold both meanings at once. It belongs to Fairey's long lineage of imagery that repurposes the visual grammar of militarism to argue against it.

Executed as a letterpress print, the piece carries the tactile impression of the plate into the paper, a craft-forward technique that gives the graphic a hand-pressed physicality distinct from Fairey's screen prints.
