Summary

Boys Don't Cry, 2009, is an eight-color screen print measuring 70 x 70 cm, issued through Space Shop in an edition of 40, signed and numbered. Its square format and rich eight-color build make it one of the more elaborate Invader prints of its year.

Why It Matters

The eight-color separation gives this print unusual chromatic depth for the artist, whose work often relies on flat, limited palettes. At a full 70 x 70 cm, it has strong wall presence, and the pop-culture-referencing title places it among Invader's works that nod to music and popular iconography.

Collector Perspective

An edition of 40, signed and numbered, at a large square 70 x 70 cm and printed in eight colors, positions this as a substantial, display-ready piece. The higher color count signals a more ambitious production than the artist's simpler two- and three-color sheets, which collectors weigh alongside the compact edition size.

Historical Context

Released via Space Shop in 2009 for 200 EUR, Boys Don't Cry reflects Invader's continued self-distribution through his own outlet. The elaborate eight-color screen print sits within his catalogue of pop-culture-tinged editions, offered at accessible original prices that belie the labor of its multi-color production.

About the Artist

Invader (born 1969, France) is a pseudonymous French urban artist known for installing mosaic works inspired by 1970s-80s arcade video games, most famously the aliens from Space Invaders. Since the late 1990s he has "invaded" cities worldwide, cementing tile mosaics onto walls and mapping each installation as part of a global game. His studio output extends the pixel aesthetic into prints, "Rubikcubism" works made from Rubik's Cubes, aluminum pieces, and alias-signed editions. He remains anonymous, appearing publicly only masked.
