Summary

H11 is a 2022 HENI edition drawn from Damien Hirst's landmark project The Currency. Each is an archival-quality Giclee reproduction on heavyweight enhanced matte stock, measuring 100 x 150 cm and hand-signed and numbered on the front. The prints magnify singular details selected from 1,000 of the original Currency artworks, and the edition is stated at 1,000.

Why It Matters

The Currency is one of the most discussed art projects of the decade, pairing 10,000 hand-painted spot works with NFTs and forcing collectors to choose between physical and digital ownership. H11 distils that project into extreme close-ups of the painted surface, so each print isolates the tactile, dotted detail that sits at the heart of the whole experiment.

Collector Perspective

Front-facing hand-signature and numbering, plus the large 100 x 150 cm scale, make H11 a substantial and personal object. Because each print focuses on a different singular detail selected from 1,000 Currency artworks, individual impressions read as effectively unique rather than identical multiples, an unusual and appealing trait within a numbered edition of this kind.

Historical Context

Launched in 2021, The Currency saw Hirst release 10,000 unique spot artworks, each tied to an NFT, with owners given a year to decide between the physical work and its digital token. The H11 prints, published in 2022, extend that project by zooming into the painted detail, translating the conceptual experiment back into a collectible physical format.

About the Artist

Damien Hirst (born 1965, Bristol) is a British artist and the most prominent figure of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Rising to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, he built a practice around mortality, science, religion, and beauty — from formaldehyde-preserved animals to his Spot, Spin, and Butterfly (Kaleidoscope) series. Hirst is also one of the most prolific printmakers in contemporary art, releasing extensive signed editions through his own science-led studio and, more recently, the HENI imprint. His work has commanded record prices and defined the market for blue-chip contemporary editions.

Collecting Damien Hirst at Gauntlet Gallery

Which Damien Hirst prints should I collect?

Signed, numbered editions from his signature series — Spots, Butterflies/Kaleidoscope, Spins, Cherry Blossoms, and skull works — are the collectible core. Look for strong condition and the artist's pencil signature. Gauntlet Gallery prioritizes complete, well-documented impressions.

How is a Hirst print authenticated?

We sell Hirst works with documented provenance and the edition's signature and numbering; many carry HENI or studio documentation. Each piece is photographed exactly as it ships, including signature and edition details.

What drives value?

Series and image (iconic Spots and Butterflies lead), edition size, format and scale, condition, and provenance all drive value. Hand-signed, low-numbered, and diamond-dust or foilblock works command premiums.
