Summary

Colour Chart (H2) is a 2017 Giclée print finished with UV spot-varnish on an aluminium panel, measuring 80 by 166.7 cm. Issued in an edition of 250 plus 8 artist's proofs, each is signed and numbered and carries the Heni Productions catalogue number H2. The panoramic horizontal format and grid of hues make it one of Hirst's most systematically composed editions.

Why It Matters

The colour-chart motif reaches back to Hirst's spot paintings and his lifelong preoccupation with the arbitrary, mechanical logic of colour arrangement. Rendered on aluminium with a selective UV spot-varnish, H2 translates that conceptual concern into a physical object where gloss and matte surfaces interact with light, giving a nominally flat grid genuine presence.

Collector Perspective

At an edition of 250, this is one of the more available panel works, which keeps it accessible while still bearing Hirst's signature and the H2 catalogue reference. The UV spot-varnish is integral to the piece's appearance, so collectors should confirm the varnish is uniform and the aluminium panel is free of dents. Its width demands a considerable, well-lit wall.

Historical Context

Published in 2017 in association with the Serpentine Gallery, Colour Chart extends Hirst's decades-long investigation into colour as a subject stripped of hierarchy or emotion. The chart format deliberately echoes industrial paint samplers and scientific reference tools, a recurring strategy in which he borrows the visual language of systems and standardisation.

About the Artist

Damien Hirst (born 1965, Bristol) is a British artist and the most prominent figure of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Rising to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, he built a practice around mortality, science, religion, and beauty — from formaldehyde-preserved animals to his Spot, Spin, and Butterfly (Kaleidoscope) series. Hirst is also one of the most prolific printmakers in contemporary art, releasing extensive signed editions through his own science-led studio and, more recently, the HENI imprint. His work has commanded record prices and defined the market for blue-chip contemporary editions.

Collecting Damien Hirst at Gauntlet Gallery

Which Damien Hirst prints should I collect?

Signed, numbered editions from his signature series — Spots, Butterflies/Kaleidoscope, Spins, Cherry Blossoms, and skull works — are the collectible core. Look for strong condition and the artist's pencil signature. Gauntlet Gallery prioritizes complete, well-documented impressions.

How is a Hirst print authenticated?

We sell Hirst works with documented provenance and the edition's signature and numbering; many carry HENI or studio documentation. Each piece is photographed exactly as it ships, including signature and edition details.

What drives value?

Series and image (iconic Spots and Butterflies lead), edition size, format and scale, condition, and provenance all drive value. Hand-signed, low-numbered, and diamond-dust or foilblock works command premiums.
