About the Work
“Putin’s Ashes” grew out of the 2023 project of the same name by Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, in which a portrait of Vladimir Putin was burned in the desert as an act of protest. Shepard Fairey’s companion screen print pairs a masked Pussy Riot figure with a disintegrating Putin portrait against his signature decorative floral field — a striking, politically charged entry in his body of protest work.
About the Artist
Shepard Fairey (American, b. 1970) is one of the most influential street artists of his generation. A RISD graduate, he rose to prominence with the Andre the Giant Has a Posse / OBEY campaign and became globally known for the 2008 Barack Obama HOPE poster. His work is held by the Smithsonian, MoMA, LACMA, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
