KAWS “Time Off” BFF — Blue

14" Reclining Vinyl Figure • Authentic Medicom Toy Production
Sold Out at Retail • Original Box & Inner Shell Included

What You Are Getting

An authentic KAWS “Time Off” vinyl figure in the Blue colorway, released August 18, 2023 by Medicom Toy in collaboration with KAWS and AllRightsReserved / DDT Store. This is the BFF character — KAWS’ fuzzy, Sesame Street–inspired alter ego — rendered for the first time in a fully reclining pose, leaning back on one arm in a moment of rest. The cobalt blue finish is the most graphic and photogenic of the three released colorways (Black, Brown, Blue).

The figure is signed and dated on the underside in yellow ink: “KAWS..23 / TIME OFF / MEDICOM TOY / CHINA” — the correct factory stamp for an authentic Medicom production. The sculpted fur texture is crisp and consistent across the body, with sharp X-eyes, the signature yellow beak, and clean paint application throughout. The figure measures approximately 14 inches long in its reclining pose.

This piece comes complete with its original inner plastic clamshell and outer retail box. The figure itself displays beautifully and is in excellent condition. The outer box shows some light wear from age and storage — expected for a 2023 release that has been preserved alongside the figure. Full condition detail is below. A serious display piece for any KAWS collector.

About the Work

“Time Off” is one of the most thematically pointed figures KAWS has ever produced. After two decades of relentless output — Companion, BFF, the Holiday series, museum-scale public installations on multiple continents — KAWS turned the BFF character into a meditation on rest itself. The reclining pose is unprecedented for the BFF: no other figure in the character’s catalog leans back on one arm like this. The work reads as an artist’s self-portrait disguised as a vinyl figure.

The Blue colorway is the visual standout of the three releases. Where the Black version reads as somber and the Brown leans warm and earthy, the cobalt Blue activates the matte vinyl surface in a way that photographs exceptionally well under any lighting — a detail serious collectors notice immediately when displayed alongside other KAWS figures. The exaggerated fur texture, sharp X-eyes, and signature yellow beak are all preserved at full sculpting fidelity.

Released as an open edition through KAWSONE on August 18, 2023, “Time Off” sold out within hours despite its higher original retail price relative to earlier BFF figures. Secondary market demand has remained consistent across all three colorways, with collectors particularly seeking the Blue for its display impact.

About the Artist

KAWS (Brian Donnelly, b. 1974) is the most commercially and institutionally successful artist of his generation. Beginning as a New Jersey–born graffiti artist subverting bus shelter ads in the 1990s, KAWS built a body of work that now spans painting, sculpture, monumental public installation, and limited-edition vinyl figures produced in collaboration with Medicom Toy. His Companion and BFF characters — both bearing his signature X-eye marks — have become two of the most recognizable contemporary art icons in the world.

KAWS has held major solo exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, Mori Arts Center (Tokyo), Serpentine Galleries (London), National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. His 121-foot inflatable Companion has appeared everywhere from the Hong Kong harbor to the surface of the moon (via SpaceX’s 2018 lunar transit project). Auction results regularly exceed $10M, with “The KAWS Album” (2005) achieving $14.8M at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2019.

Collector FAQ
How does Gauntlet Gallery verify authenticity?

Every piece is reviewed against available authentication documentation before listing. For signed prints we cross-reference COA issuers, publisher records, edition counts, signature placement, and known release details. For music and space memorabilia we work with Beckett, JSA, PSA, and Zarelli Space Authentication. Items that cannot be documented to our standard are not listed.

How do you document condition?

We photograph each print under consistent lighting to show the actual paper, frame condition, ink saturation, and any aging or edge wear. Condition notes describe observable marks, foxing, deckle wear, or print aging in specific terms — not vague labels like "good." If a piece has a flaw that affects collectibility or value, we say so explicitly. Request additional close-ups before purchase.

How is the print packed and shipped?

Prints ship flat between two acid-free rigid boards inside a corrugated outer mailer with rigid corner protection. Larger prints over 24×30 may ship rolled inside a thick-walled tube with archival tissue. All shipments are insured for full value with tracked carrier service. Framed pieces ship in custom-cut wood crates with foam edge protection. Signature on delivery required over $500.

What documentation is included?

Original COAs, publisher certificates, third-party authentication letters, and Gauntlet Gallery condition reports ship with the artwork. Every piece also gets a blockchain-verified COA on Polygon via TrueCOA, permanently anchoring provenance. Specific documentation for each listing is noted in the product description.

Why buy from Gauntlet Gallery instead of a marketplace?

Marketplaces give access but leave buyers to judge authenticity, condition, pricing, and seller credibility alone. Gauntlet adds a trust layer through detailed photos, item history, condition notes, pricing context against 50,000+ market comps, fake-risk review, and blockchain-anchored documentation. Every listing is prepared by the same curator who sourced and reviewed the piece.
