Frequency is a highly decorative yet conceptually sophisticated collaboration between Shepard Fairey and Portuguese artist ADD FUEL, bringing together two distinctly different visual traditions: Fairey’s propaganda-derived graphic language and ADD FUEL’s contemporary reinterpretation of historic Portuguese ceramic tile patterns.

The result is one of the most interior-friendly collaborations in Fairey’s recent output.

At first glance, the composition is almost architectural.

Deep cobalt-blue tile patterns interlock with pale blue geometric motifs, red floral fragments and Fairey’s familiar star-and-face insignia. The surface appears fragmented and torn, as though several patterned walls have been ripped apart to reveal additional layers underneath.

That visual tearing is central to the work.

Rather than presenting the patterns as simple decoration, the artists use rupture and layering to suggest history being excavated, rewritten and recombined.

ADD FUEL described the collaboration as an evolution from their earlier 2022 project Modular. Where the first collaboration explored construction and structure, Frequency puts pattern at the center. He reworked iconic motifs from Fairey’s visual vocabulary and combined them with his own tile-based language so that the two systems operate on what he called the same “frequency.” Fairey likewise described the work as an exploration of connection and contrast through ripped layers and intersecting visual languages.

Visual Presence

This is probably the most adaptable interior-design piece of the group.

The blue-and-white tile imagery has obvious associations with Portuguese azulejos, Mediterranean interiors, ceramics and architectural ornament. Fairey’s red accents give the work enough tension and graphic energy to keep it firmly within contemporary street art rather than pure decorative design.

It works exceptionally well in:
