Summary

The Jaunt #093 - Purpose (2023) is a risograph print on black 170 g/m2 paper, roughly 30 x 42 cm, hand-finished with bleach. Signed and numbered in an edition of 250 with 25 APs, it was produced through The Jaunt, the travel-and-art project that sends artists abroad to create work inspired by their journeys.

Why It Matters

The risograph-on-black process, worked back with bleach, is a striking reversal of Vhils's usual method: instead of carving light from dark walls, he lifts imagery out of a black sheet chemically. Its connection to The Jaunt gives the piece a documented narrative origin, linking the image to a specific trip and the project's storytelling ethos.

Collector Perspective

The Jaunt editions are collectible as a series in their own right, and #093 places this within a numbered lineage of artist commissions. At 250 plus 25 APs on distinctive black stock, it is accessible yet differentiated by the bleach hand-finishing. The smaller 30 x 42 cm format suits collectors building a set or seeking an affordable, characterful Vhils work.

Historical Context

The Jaunt, founded in 2013, commissions artists to travel and produce a limited print reflecting the experience, blending contemporary art with a residency-style narrative. Risograph, a stencil-based duplication process, has been embraced by print artists for its bold flat colour and texture. Vhils's participation situates him within a broader network of street and contemporary practitioners.

About the Artist

Vhils is the working name of Alexandre Farto, a Portuguese visual artist born in 1987 near Lisbon. He is internationally recognized for a pioneering "carving" technique in which he excavates portraits from layered walls, billboards, and surfaces using chisels, drills, and controlled explosives, effectively creating images by removing material rather than adding it. His large-scale murals appear in cities across the globe, and his studio editions translate this bas-relief, destructive-creation aesthetic into prints, laser-cut works, and mixed-media pieces. Vhils has exhibited widely and collaborated on major public and institutional projects.

What Vhils works can I collect?

Beyond his walls, Vhils produces signed, numbered studio editions including screenprints, hand-carved paper, laser-cut metal, and mixed-media relief works. Editions that preserve his signature carving texture are especially sought after. Gauntlet Gallery favors pieces in excellent condition with intact surfaces and complete documentation.

How is a Vhils piece authenticated?

We sell Vhils works with documented studio provenance, supported by the edition's signature and numbering. Each piece is photographed exactly as it will ship, including signature, edition number, and any embossing or studio marks, so details are verifiable up front.

What drives value?

Medium and technique (unique carved and relief works over flat prints), edition size, scale, condition, and documented provenance all shape price. Hand-worked, textural, and one-of-a-kind pieces carry the highest premiums.
