Summary

'Inferno' is a 2016 lenticular work by Damien Hirst, a digital print on PETG plastic that uses advanced lenticular technology to create an illusion of depth. Published framed by Other Criteria in a signed, numbered edition of 50, it measures 61 x 61 cm and shifts as the viewer moves.

Why It Matters

The lenticular process gives Hirst's insect imagery a shimmering, three-dimensional presence, deepening his fascination with creatures that retain the appearance of life in death. Like the butterfly, these iridescent insects embody the fragility of life while keeping their beauty intact, now animated by the play of light and angle.

Collector Perspective

Lenticular works are a less common corner of Hirst's editioned output, and the edition of 50, sold framed, makes 'Inferno' a distinctive, technology-forward acquisition. Collectors seeking movement and depth beyond flat prints will value the way the image changes with viewing position.

Historical Context

Hirst's insects, like his butterflies, function as universal triggers for meditations on mortality and iridescent beauty. The lenticular editions applied cutting-edge printing to these enduring motifs, extending his life-and-death iconography into an optical, kinetic medium published through Other Criteria.

About the Artist

Damien Hirst (born 1965, Bristol) is a British artist and the most prominent figure of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Rising to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, he built a practice around mortality, science, religion, and beauty — from formaldehyde-preserved animals to his Spot, Spin, and Butterfly (Kaleidoscope) series. Hirst is also one of the most prolific printmakers in contemporary art, releasing extensive signed editions through his own science-led studio and, more recently, the HENI imprint. His work has commanded record prices and defined the market for blue-chip contemporary editions.
