Gritti (H5-1)
Summary
Gritti (H5-1), 2018, is a Diasec-mounted Giclée print on aluminium panel, 90 x 90 cm, released in a limited edition of 100 and signed and numbered on the reverse. As the H5-1 entry it opens Hirst's H5 catalog sequence, a suite of works each named for a landmark hotel.
Why It Matters
As the first entry in the H5 series, Gritti anchors a themed set built around famous hotels, a naming device that gives the group a collectible, sequential identity. The square metre-scale format, aluminium mounting, and reverse signature place it firmly in Hirst's resolved editioned wall-work format rather than an open print.
Collector Perspective
Series collectors often pursue the full H5 run, and holding H5-1 gives a natural anchor point. The edition of 100 is moderate for Hirst, so availability is real but not unlimited. Confirm the reverse signature and number, and inspect the Diasec acrylic face, since the aluminium-panel construction shifts condition concerns away from paper.
Historical Context
The 2018 H5 suite reflects Hirst's habit of releasing themed groups of Diasec Giclée editions, here united by hotel names spanning cities and eras. Published in association with the Tate context, the series continues his strategy of bold, saturated imagery delivered as archival aluminium-mounted objects for the secondary print market.

About the Artist
Damien Hirst (born 1965, Bristol) is a British artist and the most prominent figure of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Rising to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, he built a practice around mortality, science, religion, and beauty — from formaldehyde-preserved animals to his Spot, Spin, and Butterfly (Kaleidoscope) series. Hirst is also one of the most prolific printmakers in contemporary art, releasing extensive signed editions through his own science-led studio and, more recently, the HENI imprint. His work has commanded record prices and defined the market for blue-chip contemporary editions.
Collecting Damien Hirst at Gauntlet Gallery
Which Damien Hirst prints should I collect?
Signed, numbered editions from his signature series — Spots, Butterflies/Kaleidoscope, Spins, Cherry Blossoms, and skull works — are the collectible core. Look for strong condition and the artist's pencil signature. Gauntlet Gallery prioritizes complete, well-documented impressions.
How is a Hirst print authenticated?
We sell Hirst works with documented provenance and the edition's signature and numbering; many carry HENI or studio documentation. Each piece is photographed exactly as it ships, including signature and edition details.
What drives value?
Series and image (iconic Spots and Butterflies lead), edition size, format and scale, condition, and provenance all drive value. Hand-signed, low-numbered, and diamond-dust or foilblock works command premiums.
