Work Summary & Collector Notes

This image is an illustration I drew of a guy with somewhat of a creepy face, which I called “Giant Brother” as a reference to George Orwell’s 1984 , where the government has everyone under surveillance and their slogan is “Big Brother is watching you.” I illustrated half the face and then mirrored it, and I discovered that since no face is perfectly symmetrical, the symmetry introduces an inhuman, sinister aspect to a picture that might not be as disturbing otherwise. I thought the guy looked creepy to begin with, but it turned out even scarier than I had predicted. ( Note: This quote refers to the original (non-offset) release of this print.)

Documented History and Meaning

History note: Shepard Fairey's OBEY / Andre the Giant campaign began in 1989 and grew into a long print and public-art practice; this page treats that as career context, not proof that this specific edition belongs to any single exhibition.

Meaning / interpretation: Fairey's practice combines propaganda-style imagery, political and countercultural themes, and a recurring OBEY vocabulary. Subject-specific intent is not assumed here unless the release record states it. This interpretive note follows the cited artist or publisher context.

Release context: The saved catalog lists 1999 and attributes the edition to Obey Giant.
