Buzz Aldrin Memorabilia: Fixed Supply After January 2024 — Value Trajectory Guide

Buzz Aldrin passed away on January 21, 2024, at age 93. His death closed the final supply of new Aldrin signatures entering the market. Unlike Neil Armstrong — who restricted his signing activity in his final years — Aldrin remained active in the collector market through his 80s and into his 90s, signing at shows, through dealers, and for charitable causes. This means the existing supply of Aldrin signatures is substantial. But it is now permanently fixed.

What This Means for Pricing

In the months following Aldrin's passing, prices for authenticated Aldrin material increased meaningfully at auction — typically 25–40% above pre-January 2024 comparable sales. This initial repricing reflects the market processing the supply cutoff. Historical patterns from other deceased astronauts suggest continued gradual appreciation as existing material is absorbed into private collections.

What Aldrin Signed

Aldrin was a prolific signer. The most common formats: 8x10 photographs (particularly lunar surface images and the famous visor reflection photo), hardcover copies of his books (multiple titles over the years), lithographs, and First Day Covers. He also signed unique items — boots, helmets, mission replicas — that command substantial premiums.

Authentication

Zarelli Space Authentication, PSA, and JSA all authenticate Aldrin material. For high-value pieces, Zarelli is the preferred service given its specialization in NASA-era signatures. Gauntlet Gallery's Aldrin pieces carry Zarelli authentication with full documentation.

The Apollo 11 Context

The Apollo 11 crew is now entirely deceased: Armstrong (2012), Collins (2021), Aldrin (2024). Complete crew items from all three — already rare — are now entirely dependent on existing supply. This is one of the most historically significant collecting categories in any autograph market, not just space.
