Shepard Fairey • Sedation In Bloom (Blue and Baby Blue) Signed & Numbered Limited Edition Screen Print, 2021
Edition of 150 • 18” x 24” Screenprint on Thick Cream Speckletone Paper Hand-Signed by Shepard Fairey • Obey Giant Publishing Chop
What You Are Getting
A hand-signed and numbered limited edition screenprint by Shepard Fairey from the Sedation In Bloom series, released December 16, 2021 through Obey Giant. This is the Blue and Baby Blue colorway — a repeating poppy flower pattern in soft baby blue linework against a rich teal field, surrounded by a cream border. Edition of 150 on thick cream Speckletone paper, 18” x 24”, with Obey Giant blind stamp.
At first glance, this looks like a piece of elegant Victorian wallpaper. That is not an accident. It is the entire argument.
The Artwork
Poppies fill the composition in a lush, repeating pattern — stems curving, petals opening, buds unfurling — rendered in delicate baby blue linework against a deep, saturated teal ground. The effect is immediately soothing. The craft is exquisite: each flower individually detailed, each leaf precisely placed, the overall rhythm carrying your eye gently across the surface in the way the best decorative patterns have done for centuries. This is an image that asks nothing of you. It wants you to relax. It wants you to stop thinking. It wants you to hang it on your wall and feel good about the room.
And that is exactly what Fairey is warning you about.
The flowers are poppies — Papaver somniferum — the plant from which opium, morphine, and heroin are derived. The source of sedation itself. The title tells you what the artwork is doing to you even as you admire it: Sedation In Bloom. Beauty as narcotic. Comfort as compliance. The decorative pattern as a delivery system for the very thing it depicts. Fairey designed a piece of art that literally functions as the thing it critiques — something so pleasant to look at that you stop questioning what you are looking at.
Origin Story: Vincent Chin, the Opium Wars, and the Poppy
The poppy pattern was not chosen randomly. Fairey originally created it for his 2021 collaboration with British-Chinese artist Gordon Cheung on In Honor of Vincent Jen Chin — a portrait print memorializing Vincent Chin, a Chinese American man beaten to death in a racially motivated hate crime in Detroit in 1982. The Cheung collaboration was part of ICFAC’s Chinese Diaspora #StopAsianHate initiative, created in direct response to the surge in anti-Asian violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For that piece, Fairey and Cheung specifically chose the poppy because of its tangled history with Western exploitation of Asia. The Opium Wars (1839–1842, 1856–1860) — in which Britain waged war against China to protect its right to flood the country with opium derived from this very flower — represent one of the most devastating chapters of Western imperialism in Asian history. The poppy simultaneously symbolizes peace, death, sleep, remembrance, and the colonial machinery that weaponized a plant against an entire civilization.
When Fairey then isolated the poppy pattern into its own standalone series — Sedation In Bloom — he stripped away the portrait and the explicit political context and left only the beautiful, soothing, decorative surface. The political content did not disappear. It went underground. It became invisible. Which is, of course, exactly how sedation works.
Fairey in His Own Words
“The poppy is a beautiful flower with many symbolic interpretations, including peace, death, sleep, and sedation. I often weave floral and decorative patterns into my art to draw the viewer in and make challenging concepts more digestible. However, decorative appeal can be used as a tool to sedate people and keep them distracted from more important social issues. Whether in entertainment, alcohol and drugs, or conspicuous consumption, I think sedation is a major cause of social and political complacency and ignorance.”
“These Sedation In Bloom prints serve the dual purpose of a decorative escape and a reminder to stay awake and aware!”
— Shepard Fairey, Obey Giant, December 2021
The William Morris Trap
The visual vocabulary here is unmistakable. The repeating floral motif, the flowing organic linework, the flat color fields with intricate botanical detail — this is the visual language of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, the nineteenth-century design revolution that insisted beauty could serve a social purpose. Morris believed that beautiful surroundings would elevate the people who lived in them — that wallpaper and textiles and decorative objects were not frivolous but essential to human dignity.
Fairey takes that argument and inverts it. What if beauty does not elevate but sedates? What if the gorgeous pattern on your wall is not enriching your life but dulling your awareness? What if the most effective propaganda is not the ugly kind — not the poster screaming at you to obey — but the kind so beautiful you do not realize it is working on you at all? The poppy pattern answers that question by simply existing. You hang it up. You admire it. You feel calm. And you have just demonstrated exactly the mechanism the title describes.

The Eight-Colorway Series
Sedation In Bloom was released as a series of eight distinct colorways, each in an edition of 150. All eight dropped simultaneously on December 16, 2021 through the Obey Giant store at $45 per print, with a limited quantity of complete 8-print sets available at $320. Maximum one order per customer per household. All colorways sold out.
The colorways include Black/Red, Black/Blue, Black/Cream, Black/Grey, Red/Cream, Red/Gold, Blue/Baby Blue (this print), and others. The identical poppy composition rendered across eight different palettes reinforces the series concept: the same beautiful pattern sedates you in whichever color your room requires. The content does not change. Only the aesthetic delivery does. The sedation is customizable.
On StockX, individual colorways currently list between $295 and $350. Complete 8-print sets list above $1,500. As standalone prints sold from the original release at $45, the secondary market reflects both the series’ popularity and its tight edition size.
Why This Piece Matters in the Fairey Catalog
It is the argument made invisible. Most of Fairey’s work — the OBEY face, the Hope poster, the anti-war imagery — announces its politics on the surface. You see it and you know immediately that you are looking at propaganda, at commentary, at a challenge. Sedation In Bloom does the opposite. It hides the argument inside something so beautiful that most viewers never reach the critique at all. It functions as exactly what it warns against — and that is what makes it one of the most conceptually sophisticated pieces in Fairey’s entire body of work.
It connects to the larger Obey Giant project. Fairey’s career-long subject is the mechanics of obedience — how imagery, repetition, and design condition people to accept authority without questioning it. Sedation In Bloom extends that inquiry into the realm of beauty itself. The question is no longer just “why do you obey?” It is “why do you stop asking why?”
It carries real-world provenance. The poppy pattern originates from the Vincent Chin memorial collaboration with Gordon Cheung — a direct response to anti-Asian violence during the pandemic, rooted in the centuries-long history of the Opium Wars and Western exploitation of Asia. That context does not appear anywhere on the print. You have to know the story. This listing tells it.

Who This Is For
Fairey collectors who already own the political work and want the piece that demonstrates how the same ideas operate when you cannot see them. Decorative art buyers who want something genuinely beautiful for their wall — this is a stunning print in any room — but who also appreciate that the beauty carries weight. Botanical and pattern art enthusiasts drawn to the William Morris tradition who want a contemporary artist engaging with that lineage at the highest level. Collectors interested in the intersection of art, politics, and anti-Asian racism activism. Or anyone building a Shepard Fairey collection who recognizes that a tight edition of 150 from a sold-out eight-colorway series offers both visual appeal and long-term scarcity. The blue and baby blue colorway is one of the most versatile in the series — the teal-to-ice palette works with virtually any interior, which, again, is exactly the point.

SHEPARD FAIREY
Few contemporary artists have bridged underground culture and institutional recognition as effectively as Shepard Fairey. Emerging from skate and punk subcultures with the original Obey Giant campaign, he built a visual language rooted in propaganda aesthetics, bold iconography, and political commentary.
What makes Fairey compelling for collectors isn’t just name recognition — it’s durability. His work sits at the intersection of activism, design, and pop culture.
From the globally recognized Hope poster to decades of tightly controlled screenprint editions, he has demonstrated both cultural relevance and disciplined market structure.
Institutional validation from MoMA, the Smithsonian, and the V&A reinforces long-term credibility. Meanwhile, secondary market data shows consistent liquidity and steady appreciation across core prints.
For collectors, this is cultural equity with infrastructure behind it — not trend-driven volatility.
