What You Are Getting
A hand-signed and numbered screen print by Shepard Fairey — God Save the Queen, 2012, edition 296 of 450 — depicting a young Queen Elizabeth II draped in an American flag, set within a gold-bordered oval inscribed “God Save the Land of Liberty,” against a Union Jack background flanked by American red-and-cream stripes. One of Fairey’s most celebrated compositions: a transatlantic collision between the British monarchy and American patriotic symbolism, rendered in the bold red, blue, cream, gold, and black palette that defines the Obey Giant visual language.
18″ x 24″, screenprint on cream speckle tone paper. Hand-signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Part of the Americana series. Unframed, ships flat. This edition sold out at release and has traded at auction through Sotheby’s.
The Artwork
The composition takes the young Queen Elizabeth II — crown, pearls, formal stole — and wraps her not in royal robes but in the American flag. Blue fabric scattered with white stars cascades across her body, replacing the traditional sash and gown with the Stars and Stripes. She holds the flag the way Betsy Ross held the first American flag in the famous colonial image — and that is the reference Fairey is making. The Queen of England has taken the place of the woman who sewed the symbol of American independence. The reversal is quiet, clever, and loaded.
Behind her, the Union Jack radiates outward in bold red, blue, cream, and white. The gold-bordered oval frames the portrait like a coin or a seal of state, with “GOD SAVE THE” arcing down the left and “LAND OF LIBERTY” arcing down the right — merging the British national anthem with American patriotic language into a single phrase that belongs to both countries and neither. Red and cream stripes fill the background outside the oval, echoing the American flag motif. The entire composition vibrates between two national identities, two visual traditions, and two ideas about what sovereignty means. Fairey does not choose a side. The print holds both flags at once.

This print is hand-signed and hand-numbered in pencil by Shepard Fairey. Fairey’s screen prints are produced in documented, controlled editions through Obey Giant Art. Each impression is individually signed and numbered by the artist, establishing a direct provenance chain from studio to collector. God Save the Queen has traded at auction through Sotheby’s and is cataloged across major art market platforms.
Auction History and Market Context
Sotheby’s precedent. An example of this print sold at Sotheby’s in the November 2020 auction “Politically Charged: The Prints of Shepard Fairey” (Lot 74) for $4,410 — two years before Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in September 2022. The post-passing market has only increased collector demand for this image.
Effective scarcity is tighter than 450. Although the stated edition is 450, the first 200 prints were included in the Americana Box Set — a portfolio that sold out as a complete unit and whose individual prints rarely surface separately. The practical secondary market supply is approximately 250 individually available impressions, many of which are now in permanent collections.
Currently listed across gallery platforms at $2,995–$3,400+ for standard numbered impressions. Artist’s Proofs command significantly higher prices.
Why This Print
The Betsy Ross reversal. The composition replaces Betsy Ross — the woman who, according to legend, sewed the first American flag — with Queen Elizabeth II holding the Stars and Stripes. It is a swap that reconfigures the meaning of both figures: the Queen becomes the custodian of American liberty, while the American flag becomes the garment of British royalty. The title “God Save the Land of Liberty” merges the British national anthem with American patriotic language, creating a phrase that sounds like it has always existed but never has. Fairey builds the entire composition around the idea that these two national identities are more intertwined than either country likes to admit.
Queen Elizabeth II (1926–2022). The longest-reigning British monarch in history, who served for 70 years. Her passing in September 2022 — a decade after this print was produced — transformed the image from contemporary commentary into historical tribute. Every Fairey print of the Queen is now a memorial as well as an artwork, and that shift in meaning has driven sustained collector interest since 2022.
The Americana series.God Save the Queen belongs to Fairey’s Americana body of work — a thematic exploration of American identity, patriotism, and national mythology through the Obey Giant visual language. The series represents some of the most culturally resonant work in Fairey’s catalog, and individual prints from this series carry strong secondary market appeal as standalone compositions.

SHEPARD FAIREY
Few contemporary artists have bridged underground culture and institutional recognition as effectively as Shepard Fairey. Emerging from skate and punk subcultures with the original Obey Giant campaign, he built a visual language rooted in propaganda aesthetics, bold iconography, and political commentary.
What makes Fairey compelling for collectors isn’t just name recognition — it’s durability. His work sits at the intersection of activism, design, and pop culture.
From the globally recognized Hope poster to decades of tightly controlled screenprint editions, he has demonstrated both cultural relevance and disciplined market structure.
Institutional validation from MoMA, the Smithsonian, and the V&A reinforces long-term credibility. Meanwhile, secondary market data shows consistent liquidity and steady appreciation across core prints.
For collectors, this is cultural equity with infrastructure behind it — not trend-driven volatility.
