ABOUT THE WORK
The Companion is KAWS’s most recognizable character — a reimagined Mickey Mouse silhouette with a skull-and-crossbones head, signature XX eyes, and an unmistakable posture that radiates equal parts vulnerability and defiance. First produced as a limited vinyl figure in 1999 with Japanese brand Bounty Hunter in a run of 500, the Companion has since appeared in over 130 toy designs, monumental public sculptures, paintings, and museum exhibitions worldwide.
The Blush colorway was released in June 2017 alongside the Blush Flayed variant, just months after the initial six-colorway Open Edition Companion launch. Created to mark KAWS’s exhibition at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, the Blush introduced a rich tonal palette that set it apart from the more austere Black, Grey, and Brown editions.
