Jack Johnson: From Pipeline to Platinum
Jack Hody Johnson (born May 18, 1975, North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii) is one of the most commercially successful acoustic artists of the 21st century — a singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and environmental activist who arrived in music sideways, through a surfing accident and a Bob Dylan cassette tape.
Johnson grew up on Oahu’s North Shore, the son of legendary surfer Jeff Johnson. He was in the water by age 5. At 17, he became the youngest surfer ever to reach the finals of the Pipeline Masters trials — one of surfing’s most prestigious competitions, held at the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore. One week later, a devastating wipeout at the Pipeline ended his professional surfing career: he received over 150 stitches and lost his front teeth. While recovering in bed, he started writing songs on the guitar he’d picked up at age 14.
Johnson studied film at UC Santa Barbara, where he played in a band called Soil and opened for Sublime and Dave Matthews Band at the Santa Barbara Bowl. He directed surf documentaries (Thicker Than Water, The September Sessions) and made a four-track demo that circulated hand-to-hand through the surfing community until it reached G. Love, who invited Johnson to record “Rodeo Clowns” for the 1999 album Philadelphonic. Producer J.P. Plunier (who also managed Ben Harper) paired Johnson with drummer Adam Topol and bassist Merlo Podlewski — the core trio that has remained together ever since.
The Music
Johnson’s 2001 debut Brushfire Fairytales — released on the tiny indie label Enjoy Records, then picked up by Universal — went multi-platinum on songs that sounded like they’d been written at a beach campfire, because many of them had been. What followed was one of the most quietly dominant recording careers of the 2000s: four #1 albums on the Billboard 200, global arena tours, and a catalog of songs that became the soundtrack to an entire generation’s summers.
Johnson is arguably the most environmentally committed major recording artist working today. In 2003, he and his wife Kim founded the Kōkua Hawai’i Foundation, supporting environmental education in Hawaiian schools and communities. In 2008, they created the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, a non-profit supporting environmental, art, and music education worldwide. Johnson has donated 100% of his tour profits to charity on multiple world tours — a commitment virtually unheard of at the arena-headliner level.
His Sleep Through the Static album was recorded using 100% solar energy at the Solar-Powered Plastic Plant studio in Los Angeles. To the Sea was recorded at his home Mango Tree Studio in Hawai’i, also solar-powered. Johnson has been recognized with awards for both music and conservation, and his advocacy extends to leading the music industry in greening practices — from carbon-neutral touring to eliminating single-use plastics at concerts.
The annual Kōkua Festival — Johnson’s benefit concert series supporting the Kōkua Hawai’i Foundation — has featured some of the biggest names in music: Eddie Vedder, Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Dave Matthews, Ziggy Marley, Ben Harper, and others. The festival, often timed around Earth Day, has become one of Hawai’i’s most significant annual cultural events.
Johnson still lives on the North Shore of Oahu with his wife Kim and their three children — in the same community where he grew up surfing.
